Wilson (Truffles) has written a small but appealing cookbook, with cake recipes serving six to 60 people. The cakes are white, yellow, spice, chocolate, hot milk, angel food, carrot, and banana, while the frostings and fillings include meringue, caramel, cream cheese, and lemon curd. These basic recipes evolve into birthday cakes for any taste or age. They are arranged alphabetically, but there is an index by category—cakes for kids, adults, chocolate lovers, important milestones, etc. The directions for the recipes are clear even though some of the creations require many steps. An introductory chapter gives tips for frosting cakes, using a pastry bag, and creating frosting decorations. Many of the recipes are illustrated with photos of the completed cake that will certainly inspire bakers to celebrate birthdays. With the reasonable price, this is an excellent addition to any baking collection.—Christine Bulson, SUNY at Oneonta Lib.
